Some panic arose today when a security researchers announced a loophole in the WhatsApp encrypted message delivery service. This quickly go reported as a backdoor which would allow someone to snoop on messages sent with WhatsApp, which is advertised as end to end encrypted and that even Facebook itself is unable to read the messages.
Noted security analyst Jonathan Zdziarski (his name itself is better than most passwords) quickly pointed out this was an overreaction and published a helpful guide to determine if a threat should be considered a “backdoor”. The fact that this guide is 20 pages long gives some indication as to why this is such a tricky subject to properly report on. Continues the theme of 2017 that you need about 5 master degrees if you want to be an informed and responsible citizen in modern society.
